"Pier 54"
Collaborative entry model by Alice Adams and Alan Finkel for an international competition sponsored by New York’s Municipal Art Society The project received a second place award. They proposed a city marketplace at Pier 54, 13th Street in Manhattan. Old construction drawings suggested to them a way of bringing the pier back to life by stripping it down to its frame. Their project shows deeply recessed glazed walls and screens to give the appearance of a separate interior structure. The roof remains, but on the land side has been glazed to light a large, open entry courtyard. A roadway and boardwalk lead along one side of the pier out to the water end with its park and water bus landing.
